What is a giclee print?
If you printed from an inkjet printer a while back, you will have noticed that within a fairly short span of time your print faded considerably with some colours seeming to change more than others. Gicleé printing is uses similar equipment but provides prints that are fade-resistant for approximately 75-100 years. In some instances this would outlast an original artwork whose pigments may or may not be stable when exposed to ultra-violet light rays of daylight. Gicleé prints are far superior to the typical poster you might buy on the high street with a quite limited range of colour depth and variety. The technical term for this colour range is 'gamut' and with Gicleés, the gamut is much wider than more traditional printing techniques. Naturally, for this reason, the art world has rapidly adopted the new technology in order to provide buyers with superior prints. This extends to collectable editions and unending print-runs. Gicleé prints are increasingly available and in addition to being found in many galleries they also form the basis of a revolution in POD (printing-on-demand) for consumers. Such services are increasing strain on actual galleries and initiating a revolution in the art world - which some might argue is long overdue (especially the artists, who have often lost out while galleries profited to an excess!) Exact print qualities depend on the nature of paper or material printed onto, plus the nature of inks used. Both vary from manufacturer to manufacturer (e.g. Epson / HP). Sometimes it is necessary to waterproof with an additional transparent protective coating. This can also enhance colours and deliver an attractive gloss finish. When commissioning any giclee printing, it is wise to view a sample first. Print-runs can be limited to one or be indefinite. Thus gicleé printing has resulted in increased artistic control.
